‘When We Unfurl’ (a Poem)

We breathe
With the urgency
Of a soul reawakened
From the sleep of the ancients:
One who has forgotten the brisk air of winter,
For whom sunlight is a distant memory,
And the dappled surface of morning clouds
Nothing but a bygone dream.

When we unfurl,
When we stretch our wings,
The Earth itself will smile:
For now, the wait is over.
